By Assistant Fire Chief Matthew Thews
February 2, 2015

On Monday February 2nd at 1737 hours, units from Urbana Co. 23 were alerted for a horse stuck in the mud in the 3200 block of Roderick Road in Urbana. Upon the arrival of the first units it was quickly discovered that this was a complex rescue situation. The Frederick County Advanced Technical Rescue (ATR) team was requested along with additional rescue units. As crews worked at the scene, Company 15 was dispatched to transfer to Co. 23's quarters. E152 (Sgt. Thews) responded with 4 volunteers on the transfer. A short time after arriving at Co. 23, E152 was requested to assist with manpower on the horse rescue. E152 initially assisted by finding a location for the Canteen and rehab units, but was then reassigned to relieve initial crews who had become exhausted. E152's crew worked hand in hand with the ATR team to secure straps around the animal's body. The straps were eventually used to free the horse from the mud and move it to a nearby barn. Unfortunately the horse was severely injured by the mishap and had to be put down. Good work by all the crews on their efforts to save the horse.
