New Market District VFC to Purchase Rescue Squad
Email Print RSS Facebook Twitter RSS

By Firefighter/EMT Matthew Thews
May 23, 2016

The New Market District VFC has been approved to proceed with the purchase of a used 2001 Peterbilt/Saulsbury rescue squad unit from the Hollywood VFD of St. Mary's County, MD. The unit was selected by the apparatus committee to be the replacement for the department's current rescue engine. It will be known as Rescue Squad 15. This will be the first rescue squad apparatus in the history of the New Market District VFC.

Both the New Market District VFC and Frederick County Fire and Rescue have recognized the need for many years of a rescue squad unit to be placed at Station 15. This is due to the frequency of serious rescue incidents that occur in and around Co. 15's area. The addition of the Costco distribution facility a few years ago, along with the associated tractor trailer traffic, has only highlighted this need. The current Rescue Engine 153 has served the department well, but it is unable to meet the current and future needs of the department. When the opportunity to acquire a very decent used rescue squad for an attractive price appeared in March 2016, the membership worked fast. The unit is being acquired for a cost of $165,000.00. It will be financed solely by the New Market District VFC. It is set to be delivered on July 1, 2016 and in service by October 1, 2016. The current RE153 will be returned to Frederick County, as they own that unit. Some specifications for the unit are listed below:

2001 Peterbilt 379 Chassis
22' Saulsbury Walk-in Box
470 HP Detroit Diesel Series 60 Engine
40,000 Miles
Allison Automatic Transmission
Seating for 8 personnel
35kw Onan PTO Generator
250 gpm Hale Pump
200 Gallon Water Tank
Pre-connected 100' 1 3/4" attack line in bumper
Amkus Rescue System w/ (4) pre-connected reels
12,000 lb Ramsey fixed winch
5,000 lb Ramsey portable winch
(3) 200' Electric Reels
(2) 200' Air Reels
(4) Bottle Air Cascade System
(8) 1500w Mounted Flood Lights
Wilburt Light Tower with (6) 1000w lights

The department will be working hard to have the following done to the unit before placing it in service; new paint, new lettering, equipment mounting, new cascade system, new LED warning light package, and an extensive driver/operator training program.

The unit will offer a significant increase in equipment storage capacity, allowing for expanded operations for Rescue Co. 15. The unit will serve not only on calls for fires and vehicle accidents, but also technical rescues, water rescues, and other miscellaneous call types. The unit will greatly improve rescue operations for the New Market District VFC, leading us to better serve our community. We would like to thank the public for their outstanding support over the years, without which this would not be possible. We would also like to thank our members for their continued service and dedication to making New Market District VFC the finest volunteer organization around.
