By Captain Matthew Thews
November 26, 2016

On Saturday Wednesday November 26th at approximately 1630 hours, units from Mount Airy were alerted for an outside fire in the 14600 block of Peddicord Road. While enroute to the scene, the units reported a large column of smoke, along with additional calls in to ECC reporting explosions. The structure assignment was filled by ECC for a fire impinging on a workshop building. Units arrived to find a workshop building fully involved, along with several piles of debris and vehicles. Carroll Chief 1 (Stull) established command as CCB15 attempted to make a knock. Command requested the box alarm assignment due to fire impinging on the house by this point. With limited water and a big head start, the fire was able to extend to the house. Command requested additional units including a rapid intervention dispatch, tanker task force, and fire task force. E152(Sgt. Thews) and U15(FF Beach) responded on the box with 9 volunteers, while RE153(Capt. Thews) responded on the fire task force with 5 volunteers. Units attempted an in interior attack, which focused on fire in the attic space and first floor. E152 assisted with these efforts, but limited manpower and water supply issues forced all crews out of the interior. An exterior attack was mounted, with crews still attempting to address the debris piles burning and extension into the surrounding woods. Two water supply draft sites were established to support a tanker shuttle. This allowed for and elevated master stream from Q11 to be placed into service. The company 15 units assisted with numerous tasks, including felling trees, hitting hot spots, fire extinguishment, water supply, and overhaul. Crews remained on scene well into the night working to extinguish all remaining hot spots.
