On Thursday June 15th at 1552 hours, Carroll County Box Alarm 1-1 was sounded for a building fire at the old Chevrolet dealership on the corner of South Main Street and Fairwood Lane in Mount Airy. E152 (Sgt. Chapman), RS15 (DFRS Capt. Newman), and C15-3 (AFC Kennedy) responded on the initial alarm. CCE12 went on the scene to find fire showing from the roof of the building, and a rapid intervention dispatch and second alarm were requested. The building was a large U-shape building, with numerous divided occupancies. A159 and B156 responded on these subsequent alarms. Crews immediately began an exterior attack with numerous master streams, as well as a concerted effort to protect nearby homes that were exposed to the fire. RS15 was initially needed to force entry to the front doors of the building. E152 secured HCE41's water supply and stretched additional hose lines. The fire progressed rapidly despite the best efforts of crews on scene. At one point, at least four aerial ladder pipes were utilized to control the blaze. The fire took several hours to control and crews remained on scene well into the night. Over 20 New Market Volunteers contributed to the effort, relieving the D-Shift crews just after 1800 hours. The cause has not yet been determined.
