On Tuesday January 16th at 2032 hours, units were alerted for a vehicle accident with one unconscious on I-270 south bound at Route 80. RS15 (Capt. Thews), C15-1 (DFC Kennedy) and C15-3 (AFC Bowles) responded with 7 volunteers on the assignment. The co. 23 units arrived to find a single vehicle off the roadway into a culvert with one occupant still in the vehicle. The patient was unconscious due to a medical condition, and with the car in a precarious position, the decision was made to remove the roof to gain access to the occupant. BAT901 (Hahn) established the I-270 command and units went to work extricating the patient. RS15's crew performed a tie-back of the vehicle before crews from PRE709 and RS15 removed the roof. The extrication took about ten minutes and the patient was then handed over to EMS crews.
