In the early morning hours of Wednesday May 13th units were alerted for a vehicle accident with entrapment on I-70 Westbound in the area of the 59 mile marker. A159 (FF Mele), RE153 (Sgt. Hanagan), E152 (FF Williamson), C15 (Chief Nalborczyk), C15-1 (DFC Moe) responded on the run with 16 volunteers. Units arrived one scene at the westbound exit ramp to Route 144 to find a tractor trailer on its side with one occupant pinned. C15-1 had I-70 Command and C15 had the Rescue group. The crews of RE153, E152, and E331 worked for about an hour on the lengthy extrication to free the occupant. Not only did the roof of the tractor have to be removed, but the patient was also pinned from the waist down by the steering wheel and dash. Ladders and a stokes basket lowering system were needed to get the patient down from the truck to the roadway. The patient was transported to a Shock Trauma by MSP Trooper 3. A great job was done by all crews involved in this complicated extrication.
