In the late evening hours of Tuesday September 29th a series of heavy rains struck Frederick County, causing flash flooding and wind damage to many parts of the area. The most severe flooding occurred within Frederick City. The calls for vehicles stranded in high water began pouring in around 2130. U15 and BT15 (Lt. Hanagan) were staffed and prepared to respond with 4 swift water technicians. Their first call came in at 2146 hours for a car in high water on Spectrum Drive near the FSK mall. RE153 (Chief Nalborczyk) also responded on the call to assist with 6 volunteers and 3 swift water technicians. Units were cancelled enroute to the call and placed on numerous other water rescue calls in the city. On one call, at Route 15 and Hayward Road, Boat 15's crew assisted a pregnant female victim to safety after she became stranded. While units were making their way back to New Market, ECC dispatched E23 to a building collapse investigation on Aviation Way. RE153 was in the area and was added to the call. RE153 arrived on scene to find a two story commercial research building with a partial roof collapse and a significant gas and water leak. Chief Nalborczyk established Aviation Way command and upgraded the call to a Hazmat response due to the nature of the research performed at the building. Initial crews quickly secured gas service to the building and surveyed the scene. Hazmat crews eventually entered the building once deemed safe and took readings for gas inside the building. Once it was determined that no gas was in the building the scene was turned over to building representatives. Crews cleared around 0145 hours.
