By Sergeant Matthew Thews
February 26, 2012

On Sunday February 26th at approximately 1415 hours Box 25-17 was struck for the reported house fire across from 12695 Monnier Court. Frederick County ECC had received numerous calls reporting fire through the roof of a house with the occupants being out of town. RE153(Sgt. Hanagan), ET154(Lt. Laird), CAR15(B. Bowman), C15(Nalborczyk), and Co. 15 Fire Police responded with 17 personnel. As ET254(Lt. Wade) approached the scene they advised of a large smoke column and requested the tanker task force as it was a non-hydranted area. Frederick ECC had already started the RID at the request of C15. First arriving ET254 found a single story rancher with fire through the roof and blowing out of the walk out basement on side D. ET254 advanced a hand line to division 1 to hold the fire at the stairs, while A259 stood by as the 2 out. ET154 arrived and stretched a line to side D to make an attack into the basement. C15 arrived and assumed the Monnier Court Command. RE153 and TWR23 arrived and began ventilating and opening up for possible egress for interior crews. Moments later ET254 noticed the floor starting to give way and requested to change to exterior operations. Command ordered an emergency evacuation of the house and crews proceeded to knock the fire from the outside with several hand lines. By this time CCE12 had established a draft site at a nearby sediment pond on Bartholows Road. A dump site was set up at Monnier Court and Moxley Valley Drive. Eventually crews reentered to overhaul the structure and hit hot spots, but were pulled out for good after a member of MCTWR735's crew fell through the floor. The firefighter was quickly helped out of the structure and evaluated by CCM19. Crews remained on the scene until 1900 hours assisting the FM and hitting hot spots.

At 1830 hours Box 15-9 was alerted for the possible house fire in the 12600 block of Jesse Smith Road. RE153(Sgt. Hanagan), C15(Nalborczyk), CAR15(B. Bowman), and U15(Sgt. Thews) responded with 10 personnel. First arrrving C15 found a controlled burning behind the residence and cleared the box.
