By Lieutenant Matthew Thews
March 5, 2013

After having just returned to quarters from a vehicle accident on Mussetter Road, units were alerted on Rescue Box 17-28 at 1520 hours for the School Bus Accident in the area of 7509 Green Valley Road. RE153(Lt. Thews), C15-2(Betts), CAPT15(Lawson), and Co. 15 Fire Police responded with 13 volunteers. While enroute ECC advised units that a car had collided with a school bus, with one trapped in the car, and possibly five injured on the bus. M17 arrived on scene first to confirm dispatch and reported one pinned in the car. RE153 and CAPT15 arrived next, with CAPT15 establishing the Green Valley Road Command and RE153 having the Rescue Group. M17 advised of the need for aviation of the patient in the car, who would require an extended extrication. RE153's crew quickly stabilized and began to remove the doors, roof, and perform a dash roll. RE171's crew assisted with the extrication. C17-2(Slane) assumed the command from CAPT15 and requested additional EMS units for the patients in the bus. A158(EMT Shirey) responded with 2 volunteers after having cleared the first accident. ET254(Lt. Shook) arrived and was assigned the Triage Group Leader. In all five children were transported from the school bus. The patient in the car was extricated in about 20 minutes and transported to Trooper 3, who had the landing zone at Linganore High School. Units remained on scene for about an hour cleaning up and assisting the police. RE153 cleared at 1638 hours. Good Job by all involved.
