By Lieutenant Matthew Thews
March 5, 2013

The New Market Volunteers began another busy day with two accidents in the mid-morning hours. At 0830 hours units were dispatched for a vehicle accident with entrapment in the area of Route 75 and Baldwin Road West. A158(Sgt. Conaway), RE153(Capt. Broyles), C15(Nalborczyk), C15-2(Betts), CAPT15(Lawson) and Co. 15 Fire Police responded with 9 volunteers. C15 arrived first to find a two vehicle accident with one on its side and established the Baldwin Road West Command. The patient who was trapped had been pulled from his vehicle prior to our arrival on scene. A259 and ET254 arrived and began to evaluate that patient. Command held Co. 25 units, A158, and M23 on the call. Crews evaluated and back boarded the single patient. CAPT15 assumed the command. A259 transported the patient to the hospital for evaluation and all units cleared a short time later.

A short time later at 0910 hours Co. 15 and 25 units were again alerted for a vehicle accident with entrapment, this time at Old Bartholows Road and Lynn Burke Road. A158(Sgt. Conaway), RE153(Chief Nalborczyk), C15-2(Betts), CAPT15(Lawson), and Co. 15 Fire Police responded with 10 volunteers. SFT901(Lt. Grossnickle) was in the area and arrived first to find a single vehicle versus a tree with one trapped. He requested aviation for a serious trauma patient and CAPT15 established the Old Bartholows Road Command. RE153 arrived, stabilized the vehicle, and performed a complete sidewall removal on the drivers side. ET254(Lt. Shook) stood by with a charged hose line. RE153's crew completed the extrication in about 10 minutes. A158 and M23 back boarded the patient and transported to the landing zone. Trooper 3 landed at the Damascus Road Community Church on Route 144 and CCE12 handled the landing zone. M158 transferred the patient to the Trooper and the ambulance aide flew along with Trooper 3 to Shock Trauma in Baltimore, MD. Units cleared the scene after about an hour. Good job by all.
