By Lieutenant Matthew Thews
April 14, 2013

On Sunday April 14th at 1144 hours units from New Market and Mount Airy were alerted for a vehicle accident with rollover and entrapment on I-70 eastbound at the rest area. A159(FF Hannaby), RE153(Lt. Thews), ET154(Chief Nalborczyk), B156(FF G. White), CAR15(FF Stearn), and C15-2(Betts) responded on the call with 19 volunteers. While enroute units were advised by ECC that a volunteer firefighter from Co. 15 was on the scene reported one on it's roof with one trapped. A159 arrived on scene to find the wreck on the eastbound side just after Bartholows Road. A159 reported a car on its roof in the ditch, confirmed one trapped, and requested aviation for a priority 2, category A trauma patient. C717C(Burns) arrived and established the I-70 Command. RE153 arrived and immediately deployed the Rescue 42 struts to stabilize the vehicle. The crew, along with ET154, began extricating the patient, performing a B-post conversion and removing both doors on the dirvers side. ET154 also stretched a charged protection line for the extrication. The extrication was complete in about ten minutes and the patient was backboarded and treated by the crews of A159 and CCM17. B156 and CCE12 established a landing zone for Trooper 3 in the eastbound lanes of I-70 adjacent to the scene. The patient was moved to Trooper 3 and crews then began picking up. Good job by all.
