In the early morning hours of Thursday April 25th, units from Mount Airy and New Market were alerted for a tractor trailer fire on I-70 Westbound at the 68 Mile Marker. ET154(Chief Nalborczyk), RE153(Lt. Thews), and A159(FF Thews) responded with 8 volunteers. ET154 arrived on scene to find a car hauler style tractor trailer with the trailer and vehicles on fire. The impressive column of fire reached thirty feet into the sky. RE153 arrived and established the Interstate 70 Command. The crews of RE153 and ET154 stretched two attack lines and immediately began putting a knock on the fire. Command requested HCET44 for manpower and additional water supply. The fire was knocked down in about ten minutes and the crews reported to A159 for rehab. Crews operated for about 45 minutes before packing up and returning to service. The cause of the fire was determined to be the trailer brakes.
