By Lieutenant Matthew Thews
September 7, 2013

On Saturday August 7th, at around 2000 hours units from Mount Airy were alerted for an injured hunter in the woods behind Prospect Park on Prospect Road in Mount Airy. CCM19 and CCLS1 arrived to find a injured person after falling out of a tree stand about 15 feet in the air. The patient had severe injuries and was located about 1000 feet off of the roadway. CCM19 requested additional manpower from New Market and Mount Airy, bringing RE153(Lt. Thews) with 6 volunteers. CCM19 also requested aviation for a category A, priority 2 trauma patient and an ATV to assist. CCR1 arrived on scene and established command. RE153 was tasked with accessing the patient via a different route than from the park side, which was filled with dense brush and a creek crossing. RE153 accessed from an adjacent address and the crew took equipment, including a stokes basket to the patient. Crews packaged the patient and hauled the patient out to an ATV trail to await the arrival of CCATV12. The patient was loaded on the ATV upon their arrival and taken out to CCM19. The patient was taken to the Mount Airy Carnival Grounds, where HCE41 had established a landing zone for Trooper 1. Trooper 1 then transported the patient to Shack Trauma. All units cleared a short time later.
