By Lieutenant Matthew Thews
October 13, 2013

At 2353 hours on Saturday, October 12th units from Green Valley, Hyattstown, New Market, and Urbana were alerted for a vehicle accident with one unconscious on Route 80 at Prices Distillery Road. C15(Nalborczyk) went responding and requested ECC to add RE153 to the call. A159(FF Wilson), RE153(Lt. Thews), CAR15(Capt. Lawson), and C15 responded on the call with 11 volunteers. ET254(Lt. Wade) arrived on scene to find a two vehicle head-on collision with one patient trapped and several others requiring medical attention. ET254-A established command and requested aviation for the entrapped patient, who had serious injuries. ET254's crew worked on stabilizing the pick up truck that contained the entrapped patient. C15 arrived and assumed command, with ET254-A taking the Operations Group. RE153 arrived and the crew of six quickly went to work, deploying both sets of Amkus spreaders and both o-cutters. RE153-A was assigned the rescue group leader and led the crews of RE153 and PE709 during the extrication. Both drivers side doors and the B-post were removed to gain access to the patient. The patient was extricated in about 10 minutes and turned over to A159 and M23 to treat. In all two patients were transported to Suburban Hospital, one to Frederick Memorial, and several others refusing care. The units picked up and went in service a short time later and left the scene to the police to investigate.
