By Lieutenant Matthew Thews
October 13, 2013

At 2219 hours on Sunday October 13th units were alerted for a vehicle accident with reported entrapment on Route 75 in the area of Lime Plant Road. A159(EMT Shirey), RE153(Lt. Thews), and ET154(Sgt. Conaway) responded on the call with 10 volunteers. Company 15 units arrived on scene to find a pick up truck on its roof in a culvert. RE153-A established the Route 75 Command. The driver had been thrown from the vehicle and landed about 50 feet away amongst some trees. The driver had landed in a ditch that carried a pipe that ran under Route 75. A significant slope carried rescuers down to the site of the patient. Crews began to evaluate and treat the patient, who had suffered significant injuries. The patient was back-boarded and a stokes basket operation was set up. M17 arrived and upon evaluating the patient the medic found the need for aviation. Command requested aviation for a category B priority 2 trauma patient and set up the landing zone at the scene. The patient was carried up the slope in the stokes with a safety rope line in place. The EMS units then treated and transferred the patient to Trooper 3. The patient was flown to Shock Trauma. Command was terminated and units cleared a short time later.
